Australia has become so successful at generating solar power that the government just announced an incredible solution to their abundance problem. The Solar Sharer program will require electricity retailers to provide free electricity to every customer for at least three hours each day, typically during the sunniest midday hours when solar generation peaks. This groundbreaking initiative means that everyone benefits from the country’s solar success, not just homeowners with panels on their roofs but also apartment dwellers who cannot install their own systems.
The program encourages people to shift their electricity use to these free hours by running dishwashers, doing laundry, charging electric vehicles, and filling home batteries during the middle of the day. Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen made clear that consumers come first, stating he would make no apologies if this scheme reduced electricity company profit margins. The initiative will launch in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia starting next July, with other regions joining in 2027 if the program proves successful. By using simple economics to match electricity use with solar supply, Australia is creating a model that could inspire cleaner energy transitions around the world while putting money back in people’s pockets.
