804 People In Dinosaur Costumes Broke A World Record In Utah

Vernal Utah dinosaur costume world record

On August 28, 2026, 804 residents of Vernal, Utah, put on dinosaur costumes, lined up in the streets of their small city, and officially broke the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs. It was sweet revenge. The community had attempted the same record at the same event the year before and fallen agonizingly short of the number needed, a near-miss that made the 2026 attempt personal in the way that only a second chance can. This time there was no question. Eight hundred and four costumed dinosaurs filled the streets, the Guinness adjudicator counted them, and the record was certified. Vernal is a city of approximately 10,000 people in the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah, known both for its connection to fossil history and for the particular community spirit that produces 804 dinosaur costumes on a Thursday in August. Certified Park and Recreation Executive Cheryl Meier organized the event and documented it in a series of photographs that show the costumes in every color, the smiles underneath them, and the scale of what a small city can do when it decides it has something to prove.

When the record was confirmed and the crowd was still assembled, the organizers asked every dinosaur to roar. Not in celebration of the record. In tribute to everyone in the crowd who was fighting cancer, including a young girl standing among the dinosaurs that day. In Vernal, a roar means I love you in dinosaur. That is a thing the community decided together and chose to believe, and the moment they all chose it at once, standing in the street in their costumes after a year of waiting for a second chance, there was not a dry eye in the valley. The photographs from after the roar are different from the ones that came before it. The record is a wonderful thing, a moment that belongs to the community forever, the kind of thing a small city in Utah can tell its children and its children's children about. But the roar is the story. Eight hundred and four people dressed as dinosaurs, standing in the sun in northeastern Utah, choosing to love out loud in the silliest and most sincere way available to them. The town got its record. The girl got her roar. The valley cried anyway.
