Every year Delta Airlines hosts a special one of a kind trip designed to place the heads of ambitious Black students squarely in the clouds, with 100 local teens climbing aboard a Boeing 757 departing from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta as the latest passengers on the Dream Flights program. The give-back initiative organized in partnership with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals introduces students to careers in aerospace and aviation, operating on the powerful principle captured by Whoopi Goldberg’s quote about seeing Lieutenant Uhuru in Star Trek and realizing representation matters. Delta captain Justin Mutawassim explains that when he met his first Black pilot, that’s when he realized he could do it too, and now he gets to show students like his 17 year old mentee Hayden Lynch that they can follow that same path.
At the helm was First Officer Dana Nelson, Delta’s first Black woman pilot hired in 2001, with the theme continuing through an all Black cabin crew and co-pilot Lyob Makonnen creating powerful representation throughout the entire flight experience. This year’s final destination was NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s Space Coast, where students wandered around with necks craned toward the ceiling to gaze at historic rockets, shuttles, and simulators used in past NASA missions. The trip finished with a panel discussion hosted by OBAP aviators and astronauts on how to navigate turbulence whether in the cockpit or in life, giving students practical wisdom alongside inspiration. This year marked the 25th edition of Delta’s Dream Flight program, which has transported and inspired more than 4,000 students throughout that time, with many following their dreams born on the flight to actual careers as pilots, aviation engineers, and aerospace professionals. Hayden Lynch captured the program’s impact perfectly, telling CBS News that his dream is to become a Delta pilot one day and inspire others just like they inspired him.
