Global Review Just Verified Wether mRNA Vaccines Are Safe.

mRNA vaccine global review Lancet UBC University of British Columbia safe effective cancer 2026

One of the most comprehensive scientific reviews ever conducted on mRNA vaccines has been published in The Lancet, and the conclusion is clear: after billions of doses administered worldwide, the technology is safe, highly effective, and poised to transform medicine in ways that go far beyond anything it has already achieved. The review, led by Dr. Anna Blakney at the University of British Columbia, draws on laboratory science, clinical trials, and real-world data to confirm that mRNA vaccines provide strong protection against infectious diseases including COVID-19 across all age groups, including children, pregnant people, and the immunocompromised. The review clarifies that mRNA vaccines do not alter DNA — the mRNA provides temporary instructions that train the immune system, then breaks down and clears from the body. Serious adverse events are rare and consistently outweighed by the protection vaccines provide against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. "After billions of doses, we now have an extraordinary amount of scientific evidence," said Dr. Blakney. "This review affirms that mRNA vaccines are a safe and highly effective platform."

But the most exciting part is what comes next. The same platform is now being developed for influenza, RSV, and personalized cancer vaccines tailored to individual patients' tumors. RNA-based therapies for autoimmune disorders are advancing through trials. The lipid nanoparticle delivery system that makes all of it possible was itself pioneered by UBC researchers. "We're seeing the same platform being applied to cancer treatment and other diseases," said Dr. Blakney. "Understanding how these vaccines work helps build confidence in the next generation of medicines." The technology that helped end a pandemic may soon be the one that ends cancer.
