How ChatGPT Could Actually Help You Win The Powerball

Powerball lottery ticket

Two women, both Powerball players, both using ChatGPT to pick their numbers, both winning over $100,000 within days of each other, generated one of the more surprising viral news stories of 2025 and a question that has not stopped circulating since: can artificial intelligence actually help you win the lottery? Tammy Carvey of Michigan opened ChatGPT, asked it for a set of Powerball numbers, played them on a ticket she bought online, and won $100,000 when four white balls and the Powerball matched. Days later, Carrie Edwards of Virginia did the same thing and won $150,000. The stories spread everywhere. Edwards, for her part, donated her entire winnings to three nonprofits. A Yahoo Tech analysis published this week went looking for the honest answer to whether any of this means anything, and the answer is genuinely interesting in the places where it is not what you expect. On the core question, the math is unambiguous: Powerball's jackpot odds are 1 in 292,201,338, every valid number combination has the exact same probability of winning, and no amount of AI training can reveal the outcome of an independent random event because the next set of balls is not hiding anywhere in the data for a model to find.

But there is one narrow thing AI can actually do that is worth understanding, and it has nothing to do with predicting numbers. Research into lottery behavior shows that humans cluster heavily when picking numbers: people favor birthdays, which cap out at 31 and skew toward low numbers, gravitate toward the number seven, and love visual patterns on the ticket grid. A study of roughly 33 million lottery selections documented how pronounced this clustering is. That matters because when multiple players hold the same jackpot-winning ticket, the prize is divided equally among all of them. A jackpot won by uncommon numbers goes to one person. The same jackpot won by a number combination that thousands of people played gets split. In 2005, 110 people matched all five white balls in a single Powerball drawing after playing a sequence printed inside fortune cookies, and the lottery had to dip into a reserve fund to pay all the fixed second-tier prizes at once. AI prompted to generate lottery numbers that avoid birthdays, sequences, repeated last digits, and obvious grid patterns will not improve the probability of winning at all. It may, though, if you happen to be the one who wins, mean you do not have to share.
