The GTA VI Extended Look On Netflix Was So Big It Briefly Crashed The Platform And The Numbers Are Staggering [VIDEO BELOW]

Grand Theft Auto VI is not even out yet and it already broke Netflix. On August 27, Netflix aired an extended look at Rockstar's most anticipated game in history, and the viewership spike that followed was so steep the platform experienced a momentary wobble just as the presentation went live. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Netflix viewership jumped 35 percent hour-over-hour the moment the GTA VI preview began, and roughly 50 percent compared to the same time the previous day. Mobile app users were up nearly 50 percent compared to the average across the previous 12 Thursdays. Web visitors surged 125 percent versus that same baseline. The demand was simply larger than anyone expected. "By aligning itself with the launch of a highly anticipated console title, Netflix is converting heightened consumer interest into re-engagement from lapsed viewers and sign-ups from non-subscribers," said Abe Yousef, Sensor Tower's Senior Insights Analyst.
GTA VI, which is set to launch on PlayStation and Xbox on September 26, has now accumulated an estimated 4.6 million preorders — with 77 percent of those on PlayStation, reflecting where Rockstar chose to record the extended look. The game has been one of the most talked-about releases in gaming history ever since Rockstar dropped its first trailer in December 2023 and broke YouTube's 24-hour record for non-music content. The Netflix preview added new story details, gameplay footage of protagonists Lucia and Jason, and a look at the modern Vice City setting that has fans more excited than ever. GTA VI launches in less than a month. Netflix, presumably, is now stress-testing its servers.
