Taylor Swift Pays Tribute To Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children, and grew up without electricity or running water, and she became one of the most successful, beloved, and genuinely good-hearted human beings that American popular culture has ever produced. She wrote I Will Always Love You at age 29, turned down an honorary degree from the University of Tennessee three times before finally accepting it, funded the Pfizer vaccine research that helped end the COVID-19 pandemic and then asked that the resulting vaccine not be named after her, gave away 200 million books to children who needed them, and at the peak of her career turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice because she said she did not think she had done enough to deserve it. She was offered it a third time and accepted. She sang at her own 75th birthday party. She said she modeled her look on the town tramp because she thought the tramp was pretty. She meant every word of it.
Taylor Swift, who together with Travis Kelce donated $2 million to Parton's Imagination Library in July after their wedding, released a written tribute the night of Parton's death describing a world without Dolly as something that does not feel possible, real, or right. She wrote that Parton's legacy will be an everlasting one because of the eternally generous way she spent her time on earth and the countless lives she changed for the better, and called her the gift that kept on giving, someone who gave us her lessons about the world gently, honestly, simultaneously, and oftentimes hilariously. She described Parton as true grace and true grit, all in one dazzling person, and said she would think of her each step of the way. Swift was not alone: tributes arrived from virtually every corner of music, film, literature, and public life, because virtually every corner of those worlds had been touched by Parton at some point over eight decades. She holds the record for the most Grammy nominations of any country artist in history, with 55. She has 26 number-one singles on the Billboard Country charts. The Imagination Library has now sent books to over 300 million children in five countries since she started it in 1995 because she wanted every child who grew up the way she did to have access to books. That program will continue. She made sure of it.
