Al Pacino Is Receiving The Highest Honor SAG-AFTRA Can Give

SAG-AFTRA announced that Al Pacino will receive the 2026 SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, the union's highest honor, at the 33rd annual Actor Awards on February 28, 2027, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, streaming live on Netflix. Pacino is the 62nd recipient of the honor, which is given annually to an actor who fosters the finest ideals of the acting profession and is nominated and voted on by members of the SAG-AFTRA National Honors and Tributes Committee. He follows Harrison Ford, who accepted the award at the most recent ceremony. Pacino's career spans more than six decades and encompasses some of the most studied and quoted performances in the history of American film and theater: Michael Corleone across The Godfather trilogy, Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon, Tony Montana in Scarface, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway, Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, for which he won his Academy Award, and Vincent Hanna in Heat, among dozens of others. His existing award collection includes an Oscar, a BAFTA, two Emmys, four Golden Globes, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement, the AFI Life Achievement Award, two Tony Awards, and the Honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The Life Achievement Award from his own union, voted on by the people he has worked alongside throughout his career, will be the latest addition.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin, himself an actor best known for his role as Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, said in his statement that like so many actors he has spent his life in awe and appreciation of the force of nature that is Al Pacino, and that watching him perform is witnessing a student and a master simultaneously. The description is not accidental: Pacino is known for an approach to acting that combines intense preparation, an improvisational instinct, and a relationship with uncertainty that has made his performances notoriously unpredictable in the best sense. He studied at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and has described acting as something that chose him rather than something he chose. His statement accepting the honor was brief and characteristic: I wondered and wandered most of my life but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors. It is the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life. It is an honor to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA in celebrating the journey. He is 86 years old, has been acting professionally since 1963, and last appeared on screen in a leading role in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis. The journey he is being honored for celebrating is one that is, by all available evidence, not finished.
