Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Secretly About To Turn 79 And Still Has One Rule He Lives By

Arnold Schwarzenegger fitness at 78

Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote a personal essay for Newsweek at age 78, and the opening is characteristically direct: people keep asking him why he still goes to the gym. They assume fitness has a finish line. He does not. He has had shoulder surgeries, heart surgeries, and a hip replacement. After the heart surgeries, doctors told him heavy lifting was no longer an option, and he walked back into the gym and had to relearn everything from the beginning, starting with weights lighter than he had used in decades, relearning movements he had done for 60 years, discovering that discipline and stubbornness are not the same thing. He still coaches people of all ages on fitness through his Pump Club app, including a member who recently turned 100. He plays with his grandchildren, which he describes as a very honest test of his mobility. He rides a bike instead of running on the beach. He skis but calls it quits after a half day. The rule he has lived by since he was competing as a bodybuilder, and which he says only becomes more accurate the older he gets, is a line he borrowed from Teddy Roosevelt: if you rest, you rust.

The essay is not about bodybuilding nostalgia. It is about the specific and gradual way that pain and stiffness convince people to make their world smaller, and what happens when you refuse to let that happen. He describes watching people around him skip the stairs because their knees hurt, pass on a walk because they feel stiff, slowly avoid the things that once felt easy, until their limitations begin to define them. He has been recognizing the pattern in others because he has fought it in himself. Some mornings, he writes, his joints feel heavy and the workout feels far away. On those mornings he does not wait for inspiration. He gets up anyway, and somewhere on the bike ride or a few sets in, he is back. The research supports his position: regular physical activity at older ages can reduce pain, improve function, build strength, improve balance, and protect quality of life, and studies have shown that people even in their 80s and 90s can still gain meaningful strength with consistent training. Schwarzenegger's version of that evidence is simpler: he has met people in their 60s and 70s in the Pump Club who went from being unable to squat their own bodyweight to competing in powerlifting competitions. He is approaching 79. He is at the gym. Movement, he says, is not a luxury for the young or the pain-free. It is maintenance for life.
