Mark Wahlberg Says He Prays For This All The Time

Mark Wahlberg appeared at the premiere of his new film By Any Means, a basketball drama produced with LeBron James and co-starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and when reporters asked him what the title of the film means to him personally, his answer centered not on the movie but on something he has spoken about openly for years. He said he prays all the time, specifically for guidance on how God wants him to utilize the talents and gifts he has been given to serve others, and described it as something he does not take lightly. He said he knows he has a big responsibility with all the blessings that have been bestowed on him and that he has to make sure he is making a real impact. When asked who or what he considers himself to be in service to, his answer was immediate: to the Lord. He has said in multiple interviews that he will skip a workout before he skips prayer, and that faith is the most important thing in his daily routine ahead of his famous early morning gym sessions. He wakes before dawn, says his prayers before his children wake up, and describes it as the foundation from which everything else in his life flows.
Wahlberg grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, spent time in prison as a teenager, and has described his Catholic faith as the thing that turned his life around. He credits all of his personal and professional success to that faith and has been publicly and unapologetically open about it in an industry where that level of candor is unusual. He said on the Today show that God did not come to save the saints but to save the sinners, and that focusing on faith allowed him to become a better version of himself. He has partnered with the Hallow prayer app to promote daily prayer, co-guided Lenten devotional challenges with other Catholic public figures, and produced Father Stu, a film about a Montana priest he funded largely out of his own pocket because he believed the story needed to be told. He does not force his faith on his four children, but he is clear about what they see every day: a father who cannot start the day without prayer, without Scripture, and without going to Mass when possible, and who is quietly hoping that watching it work for him will be enough to make them curious about it for themselves. By Any Means opens in theaters this fall. Whatever the box office shows, Wahlberg has already said what success looks like to him: being a good father, a good husband, and a good human being who helps his fellow man.
