Minecraft Is Helping Kids Around The World Redesign Their Cities And The Results Are Real

In Beirut, 14-year-old Georges Zahar used Minecraft to redesign three damaged stairways after the 2020 port explosion, adding a slide, speaking tube handrails, and shaded seating. Fourteen months later, every feature existed in real life. The St. Nicolas stairs, once abandoned and covered in debris, are now filled with people, restaurants, and neighbors dining outside their front doors. "The stairs are no longer just connecting two places, it became a destination in itself," said Corine Abiramia, who participated in the same workshop. Since 2012, the Block by Block Foundation and U.N.-Habitat have supported the redesign of over 150 urban spaces in 55 countries, with more than 30,000 citizens using Minecraft to participate in the design process. From a trash-strewn riverbank in Indonesia transformed into a playground with badminton and basketball courts, to flood-prone creek banks in Brazil transformed into lit parks with soccer fields, the same pattern repeats: children imagine improvements in Minecraft, architects translate those designs into blueprints, and communities build them.
Minecraft flips the usual power dynamic between adults and children, the younger person instantly knows the game and becomes the expert in the room. Participants walk through a real site first, rebuild it digitally, consider accessibility for elderly and disabled residents, vote on the best designs, then watch construction begin. "Young people are slightly sick of being asked what they think when there's no tangible result," said Jose Chong of U.N.-Habitat. Block by Block always financed construction — the follow-through is the whole point. A new U.N.-Habitat initiative called Games for Urban Futures continues the work globally. One of the world's most popular games turns out to be one of its most powerful tools for teaching children they can change the places where they live.
