Morgan Freeman Is Secretly About To Turn 90

Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman turned 89 in June and looks, by almost universal agreement, exactly the same as he did in 1994. He has looked exactly the same since roughly the Clinton administration, and at this point it has become one of Hollywood's most quietly remarkable open secrets: the man is approaching 90 and just will not slow down. He is currently reprising his role as Edwin Mullins, the US Secretary of State, in season three of Taylor Sheridan's espionage thriller Lioness on Paramount Plus, alongside Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman, and he told the New York Times that Sheridan's writing attracts him because it deals with what people are actually going through emotionally, with the courage it takes to make decisions under pressure. He also has a blues album he produced and narrated due out in August, an extension of his decades-long mission to preserve blues music, which he has championed through a live blues club he co-founded in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is 89. He has a new TV show and a new album out at the same time.

What makes Freeman's career even more remarkable is when it actually started: unlike actors who break through in their twenties, Freeman did not achieve his first major Hollywood recognition until Street Smart in 1987, when he was 50 years old. He was 57 in The Shawshank Redemption. He won his Academy Award for Million Dollar Baby at 67. He is now 89 and still working on prestige television with two of the most in-demand actresses in the industry. His voice, which he dismisses with characteristic self-deprecation as nothing he understands the fuss about, has narrated March of the Penguins, played God in Bruce Almighty, and served as the moral compass for more documentaries than any other living actor. In the New York Times interview, he said he chooses projects based on what they are actually about, on whether the writing does justice to the human experience, and that is the filter he has applied for 40 years with no sign of changing. He turns 90 next June. He will almost certainly be filming something.
