Tiger Woods Has A Five-Year Driving Ban And The Internet Is Already Celebrating

Tiger Woods Golf Course

Tiger Woods is one of the greatest golfers in human history. He is also one of the most memed drivers in internet history. Every time Woods has had a driving-related incident, the jokes arrive within minutes — an affectionate roasting of a man who can hit a golf ball 300 yards with supernatural precision but has had a complicated relationship with the other kind of driving. That era is now officially on pause. Woods appeared in court in Martin County, Florida, accepting a plea deal that suspends his driving licence for five years following a March rollover crash. He agreed not to contest a reckless driving charge, reducing the original DUI charge, with a $1,000 fine. No one was injured, though Woods had to crawl out through the passenger door to free himself. "Today I resolved a case involving a man who drives a golf ball for a living," said Florida State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl. "Tomorrow, I'll resolve a case in the same manner for a man who drives a nail for a living." The line was perfect.

More importantly, Woods is getting help. Following the crash, he wrote that he was stepping away to seek treatment. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery." He is 50 years old, has had multiple back surgeries and a near-fatal car accident in 2021, and has spent much of the past five years managing significant physical pain. The five-year ban removes one worry from the table. The recovery is what matters. The memes can wait.
