69 Year Old Donates Record Amount of Blood

251 donations totaling over 30 gallons to the American Red Cross

Dan Ryan was 23 years old, hated needles, and had never once considered donating blood when his brother approached him at work in 1980 during a Red Cross blood drive and explained how donations saved lives, described the personal satisfaction of helping strangers in need, and spent several weeks patiently making the case. When that still did not work, Dan's brother called him a chicken and dared him. That, he now cheerfully acknowledges, is the part that actually got him through the door. In the 45 years that followed, Dan made 251 whole blood donations to the American Red Cross, pouring out more than 30 gallons, or the equivalent of 344 cans of Coca-Cola, more than any other man on Earth, a total that earned him the Guinness World Record for most whole blood donated by a male, certified in Malta, New York in June 2025. The average adult human body holds between 1.2 and 1.5 gallons of blood. Dan has donated more than 20 times that amount, one pint at a time, roughly every eight weeks for over four decades.

His brother, who started it all, is no longer alive, and Dan said that knowing several people who have had surgery, including his father who had open heart surgery, has only deepened his sense of why the donations matter. His commitment to giving has also spread through his family: after hearing about the world record, his 20-year-old granddaughter announced she now wants to become a regular donor herself, and Dan said with clear pride that who knows, maybe she will hold the female donor record someday. The American Red Cross issues milestone pins to returning donors as a thank-you, and over the years Dan collected so many that about 15 years ago he built a custom wooden frame for them as a hobby project. As of May 2026 he had 32 pins displayed on the frame, but he made it large enough to hold 40, because if he stays consistent he will reach that mark just before his 80th birthday. He described finding out about the record by accident while searching for something entirely unrelated online, discovering that he had already surpassed the previous record holder, and feeling something he called simply unbelievable.
