Airbnb Just Banned Hosts From Making Guests Wash Dishes, Do Laundry, Or Take Out Trash.

Airbnb checkout chores new rules

Airbnb announced updated house rules policies taking effect November 20, 2026, that ban hosts from requiring guests to complete cleaning tasks that are typically handled by professional cleaners, ending a practice that had become one of the most complained-about aspects of the vacation rental experience. Under the new rules, hosts may no longer require guests to wash and put away dishes, strip and remake beds, start a load of laundry, or take garbage off-site before checkout. Hosts also cannot instruct guests to avoid using listed amenities like air conditioning, though they can ask that the AC be turned off when leaving. The rules apply to all reservations booked on or after November 20 and cover all house rules regardless of how they are communicated, meaning hosts cannot introduce additional requirements through in-property signs, messages sent after booking, or verbal instructions at arrival. Any rules that do exist must be fully disclosed before a guest confirms a reservation. Violations could result in warnings, flagged listings, or reduced visibility in Airbnb search results for repeat offenders. Hosts can still ask guests to place dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels in one place, and sort garbage and recycling into designated indoor bins.

The policy change addresses a tension that had been building for years between Airbnb's cleaning fee structure and the checkout chore expectations that many hosts had attached to their listings. Guests who paid substantial cleaning fees, sometimes exceeding $150 per stay, routinely arrived at properties with lengthy checkout instruction sheets requiring them to strip beds, run dishwashers, wipe down counters, and bag all trash before leaving, tasks that made the cleaning fee feel like a payment for a service that was not actually being provided. Airbnb's new policy draws a clear line between what guests are responsible for, leaving a space in reasonable condition, and what hosts and their cleaning teams are responsible for, the actual cleaning work covered by the fee. The company is also standardizing seven categories of enforceable house rules covering pets, smoking, quiet hours, events, commercial photography, maximum overnight guests, and locking up, giving both guests and hosts clearer expectations upfront. Some hosts responded negatively in Airbnb's community forums, arguing the change would leave professional cleaners dealing with accumulated dirty dishes between back-to-back reservations. Others said the concerns were overblown and that most guests cleaned up after themselves without being explicitly required to. For guests who have been paying cleaning fees while scrubbing kitchens on their way out the door, the new rules are straightforwardly good news.
