Billie Eilish's Tour Fed 7.7 Million People

While Billie Eilish was recently criticized online for comments she made about her commitment to veganism, the full picture of what she has actually been doing tells a different kind of story entirely. During the 106-sold-out-show run of her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, Eilish partnered with the plant-based food charity Support and Feed, founded by her mother Maggie Baird, to fund 7.7 million vegan meals for people experiencing homelessness across the cities she performed in, making it the largest food donation initiative in the history of a touring music act. Every night of the tour, a portion of proceeds went directly toward ensuring that meals reached people who needed them in the same community where the concert was happening, connecting the spectacle of a sold-out arena to something tangible and immediate just outside its doors. At the end of the tour, Eilish announced she had donated a total of $11.5 million to organizations focused on food equity, climate justice, and carbon reduction.
Eilish has been vegan since she was 12 years old and has spoken openly for years about the role food choices play in both animal welfare and environmental impact, but her approach to the issue has consistently leaned toward doing rather than lecturing. Support and Feed, the organization her mother launched in 2020, has now delivered tens of millions of plant-based meals to shelters and food banks across the United States since its founding and has expanded its reach to over a dozen cities. Eilish was named the Wall Street Journal Magazine's Music Innovator of the Year during the tour, accepting the award in a room that included some of the wealthiest people in the country and using her acceptance speech to encourage those with resources to use them for people who need help. A recent Elle Magazine video where she called eating meat inherently wrong drew mockery and backlash from across the internet, but the numbers behind the tour make one thing hard to argue: she spent a year and a half backing her words with action, one sold-out show at a time.
