Celebrating International Kissing Day By Breaking A World Record

Renato Bayma Gaia, who is perhaps the only person to have previously held a Guinness World Record for the ability to rotate his foot 180 degrees, decided to expand his record-breaking portfolio in a completely different direction by breaking the world record for the most kisses in 30 seconds by a pair with his partner Naiara Roberta Ribeiro de Marins, choosing International Kissing Day on July 6th as the occasion because, as he put it, he was very sure they were the best couple in the world at kissing and felt they needed to prove it. The previous record stood at 146 kisses in 30 seconds, set by UK journalist Joshua Saunders and his partner Jenny Troy in London in August 2025. Saunders had even said at the time that he hoped someone would come for the record. Renato and Naiara obliged. In the attempt, a kiss was counted each time either participant's lips made contact with any part of the other person's face, requiring speed, coordination, and the kind of enthusiastic commitment to a 30-second task that most couples reserve for much longer occasions.
Guinness World Records published the couple's attempt alongside their certification on International Kissing Day, which is observed annually on July 6th and originated in the United Kingdom before spreading globally as a celebration of affection, closeness, and the science-backed benefits of kissing, which include stress reduction, elevated mood, lower cholesterol, and improved cardiovascular regulation. Renato described the experience of holding a Guinness World Record as something he had always found meaningful, and Naiara said the attempt was one of the most fun things she had ever done with him, which says something about their relationship that no certificate could fully capture. The record now belongs to Brazil, at least until the next couple decides that their 30 seconds could be put to better competitive use than anyone else's. Saunders, for his part, had already made clear he was fine with that possibility.
