Firefighter Dresses Up As A Superhero To Save His City

The Roanoke Raven real-life superhero

By day, he is a firefighter and EMT in Roanoke, Virginia. By night, he puts on a Spider-Man-inspired stealth mask, goggles, and all-black gear and becomes The Roanoke Raven, Virginia's first self-appointed real-life superhero. He is not fighting crime. He is doing something that might actually be harder: getting people to care about their neighbors. The Roanoke Raven leads litter pick-ups, returns abandoned grocery carts, distributes bottled water to unhoused residents, and uses TikTok to raise awareness about water insecurity. In one video, he bought a 24-pack of water for under $5, distributed 120 bottles to people in the area, donated the rest to the Roanoke Rescue Mission, then said: "All we did today was put a tiny Band-Aid on a large problem. It takes two dudes and $20 to get 120 bottles of water donated. Imagine what we could do if we all worked together." "We live in a city where thousands of emergencies happen a day and no one really talks about them," he told local news, keeping his identity anonymous. "I think we can make the city a better place to live. And if it takes wearing a superhero mask to do it, let's do it."

His inspiration comes from the heroes he grew up with. The Flash, he says, "sees the good in people." Batman "proves you don't need powers to do the right thing." But unlike the heroes in movies, the Roanoke Raven specializes in small, unglamorous, immediately helpful acts. No fight sequences. No radioactive spider. Just a firefighter who decided his city needed someone willing to show up and show others how easy it is to do the same. "Fly high, citizens."
