George Clooney Just Received The Highest Honor At Venice Film Festival And His Speech Was Unforgettable.

George Clooney accepted the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival on September 3, and opened the way only Clooney can. "When they tell you that you're getting a lifetime achievement award, two things come to mind," he told the crowd. "The first is what an incredible honor this is. And the second is — do they know something that I don't?" He called his 45-year career a "series of happy accidents" — quite an understatement from one of only three people ever nominated for six different Oscar categories, winning for supporting actor in Syriana and best picture as producer of Argo. The award was presented by his Jay Kelly co-star Laura Dern. "He is a man of the deepest kind of humanity and integrity," she said, noting he was Sexiest Man Alive twice. Brad Pitt sent a statement praising his storytelling, then added: "Please, please keep him off the dance floor. He doesn't know!" Dern called him "this pigeon-toed kid from Kentucky" who "never met an award he wouldn't run to."
Clooney's speech touched on the role of artists in times of fear — "stories are always dangerous to people who peddle in fear," he said, "and the people who are afraid of books and music and stories are never the heroes in history." He ended with a Batman joke. His two children, he said, are the only people who thought he was good in the role. "I haven't let them see the whole film. Don't watch it til the end — it's terrible." He then thanked Amal, watching from the audience, in a moment that quieted the room. "I am at a loss for words to describe how much I love my wife and how proud I am of her and our two children." Venice is where Clooney married Amal in 2014. He came back for the highest honor the festival gives. Not a bad arc for a pigeon-toed kid from Kentucky.
