He Ran An Ultra Marathon On Every Continent In 7 Days

Christian Johnson, a 31-year-old runner from Madera, California, has been certified as the holder of two Guinness World Records after completing a 50-kilometer ultra marathon on all seven continents in six days, ten hours, and 24 minutes, as part of the Great World Race in November 2025. The race began in Cape Town, South Africa, continued to Wolf's Fang, Antarctica, where the group set off at 2am across compacted snow that competitors described as an ice skating rink, then pushed on to Perth, Australia, Abu Dhabi, Altura in Portugal, Cartagena in Colombia, and finished in Miami, Florida. Johnson's aggregate race time across all seven ultra marathons was 31 hours, 25 minutes, and 37 seconds, nearly seven hours faster than the previous record holder, and shattering a mark that had been considered extremely difficult to beat. In one week he covered 350 kilometres on foot and approximately 41,000 kilometres by air. He ran through African heat and Antarctic frost, sleeping on a charter plane between continents, with one overnight hotel stay in the entire journey.
The record was never only about the running. Johnson dedicated the entire challenge to his grandfather, who has been living with Parkinson's disease for four years, and partnered with the Michael J. Fox Foundation throughout the race, fundraising $10,000 for Parkinson's research. His grandfather was at the finish line in Miami to meet him, and Johnson brought him across the final steps together. He said afterward that the records and accolades were not what gave the moment its weight, and that knowing he had made his grandfather proud was the biggest accolade of them all. Madera County honored him with an official proclamation from its Board of Supervisors after the records were confirmed, and Johnson said the recognition felt surreal, that he had never imagined being celebrated by his county simply for doing something he loves. He has already said he has a big year planned for 2026, with another Guinness World Record in mind involving California. Wherever he runs next, his grandfather will be at the end of it.
