John Cena Spent 21 Hours In Surgery To Fix His Hair And Says It Changed His Life

John Cena showed up at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026, with a freshly shaved head, a story to tell, and a level of openness about cosmetic surgery that most celebrities twice his age would not volunteer. Speaking with People magazine at the convention, the 49-year-old actor and former WWE champion gave the full account of his two hair transplant surgeries, totaling more than 21 hours under the knife, both performed at the Anderson Center for Hair in Georgia by Dr. Ken Anderson, a man Cena described as a master. His first surgery, in November 2024, ran 13 and a half hours. His second, completed in June 2026, was eight more. Both used a technique called follicular unit extraction, which uses small surgical punches to remove individual hair follicles and redistribute them, and both required him to shave his head completely beforehand so Dr. Anderson could plant new follicles as efficiently as possible. The shaved look is not the destination. It is the waiting room. But Cena says he is fine with that and has full trust in the process.
What makes the story more than a celebrity cosmetic surgery item is the reason Cena gives for doing it, and more importantly for talking about it. He says it was WWE fans who pushed him, not gently. For years, fans held up signs in arenas that read Bald John Cena, and while Cena acknowledged he tried to hide his thinning hair rather than address it, the audience kept bringing it to light. He told Entertainment Tonight that after undergoing the first surgery it completely changed the course of his life, and he added that if there was not so much shame surrounding the procedure he would have gotten it done a decade earlier. That shame, he said, is exactly why he is so open about it now. Seven or eight out of ten men experience thinning or baldness, he noted, and most of them feel alone in it the same way he once did. He said his routine now includes red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, and specialized shampoo and conditioner alongside the surgeries, and that the combination has made a difference he can feel. His message to any man sitting at home hiding under a hat is the same one the WWE crowd accidentally gave him by holding up signs: you do not have to pretend it is not happening.
