Louis Vuitton Just Debuted Plant-Based Fur On The Paris Runway

When Louis Vuitton sent models down the runway at the Cour Carrée of the Louvre during Paris Fashion Week in March, one vest quietly made history: it was the first piece from LVMH, the world's largest luxury goods group, to be made using plant-based faux fur, marking a significant moment in fashion's slow shift away from animal-derived materials. The material used is called Savian, developed by Paris-based biomaterials startup BioFluff and made from natural plant fibers including hemp, flax, and nettle, which are processed into a soft, fluffy textile that is biodegradable, compostable in industrial facilities within 12 weeks, and produces at least 75 percent fewer carbon emissions than conventional plastic-based faux fur alternatives. Unlike most synthetic fur, which is made from polyester or acrylic and can take centuries to break down in a landfill, Savian Naturals is designed to return to the earth after its useful life is over, a property that has attracted attention far beyond the fashion industry. Louis Vuitton is a particularly notable partner for BioFluff because LVMH itself hosts the startup through its Paris incubator for luxury sector innovators.
The Fall/Winter 2026 show also featured coat linings in hemp-based faux fur throughout the collection, and menswear designer Martine Rose used Savian extensively across her own Fall/Winter 2026 pieces in the same week, saying she loved it for its aesthetic. BioFluff co-founder Roni Gamzon, who launched the company at 24 after meeting a bioengineer at a sustainability conference, acknowledged the road to this moment had not been smooth, saying creative director changes at major houses had made the process very difficult and that her team had their heart broken a lot along the way. The Television Academy separately announced in March that real fur would be banned from the Emmy Awards red carpet this September. Animal rights organizations say the Louis Vuitton moment is meaningful, while noting that the house remains one of the last major luxury fashion brands still using traditional animal fur.
