Only One Couple In Six Million Ever Reaches This Anniversary.

On June 6, 2026, Betty and Kermit Eastman of St. Cloud, Minnesota, celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary, joining a group so small that experts estimate only one couple in six million lives long enough to reach it, and on average only one American couple achieves it in any given year. Both recently turned 99, Betty on June 12th and Kermit back in March, and the family gathered at Talamore Senior Living to mark a milestone that most people never think about because it has always seemed too far away to imagine. Their story started across a neighborhood street in Thief River Falls, where Betty moved as a teenager and immediately caught the attention of the boy with the lawnmowing business. Betty's father noticed Kermit walking up and down the sidewalk with suspicious frequency. Kermit eventually stopped walking and started talking. They married in 1946, shortly after he returned from serving in the US Navy during World War II.
The decades between then and now were not without hardship: Betty was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 77 and breast cancer at 86, and Kermit said that every couple has events they wish had not happened, but that good memories kept arriving every day regardless. The family grew to encompass five generations. Kermit eventually went into education after they moved to St. Cloud, and the values they built their life around followed their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren outward into the world. When asked about the secret to 80 years, neither of them reached for anything complicated. Kermit's answer was four words: I've loved her since I met her. Betty's advice was two: be honest and don't keep secrets. Between the two of them, they had covered everything worth knowing about what makes a marriage last, and they said it with the particular ease of people who have actually done it.
