Samsung Just Gave Its Chip Workers A $400,000 Bonus Because Of AI

Samsung Electronics' 78,000 semiconductor employees have ratified a landmark bonus deal that will distribute an average of around $370,000 per worker this year, with memory chip division employees in line for up to $400,000 each, after the South Korean tech giant's profits surged to historic levels driven by the global boom in AI infrastructure. The deal was struck after months of labor negotiations that culminated last week in a last-minute agreement reached just hours before 48,000 workers were set to begin an 18-day general strike that would have been the largest work stoppage in semiconductor history. More than 73 percent of union members voted in favor of the agreement, with 95 percent of eligible voters participating. Samsung's operating profits are projected to multiply sevenfold in 2026 to approximately $218 billion, fueled by insatiable demand for the high-bandwidth memory chips that power AI data centers around the world.
The deal, which will run for 10 years and is tied to ambitious annual profit targets, allocates 10.5 percent of the semiconductor division's operating profit as employee bonuses paid in company stock, plus an additional 1.5 percent in cash, a structure modeled after a similar deal rival chipmaker SK Hynix had already reached with its own workers. The total bonus pool this year is expected to reach roughly $26.6 billion across the division. Samsung accounts for approximately 12.5 percent of South Korea's entire GDP, which meant the prospect of a strike had raised concerns well beyond the company itself, and markets responded positively when the deal was announced, with Samsung shares rallying more than 6 percent the following morning. The agreement is a striking example of workers sharing directly in the extraordinary wealth created by the AI era, with average bonuses representing more than three times what Samsung's chip employees earned in total compensation in all of 2025.
