San Diego's Free Summer Concert Series Just Kicked Off!

One of San Diego's most beloved summer traditions is back, and this year it comes with a milestone worth celebrating. The Twilight in the Park concert series has returned to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park for its 45th consecutive summer, bringing free live music to one of California's most iconic outdoor settings three nights a week through late August. The series kicked off this week and will feature more than 30 acts performing everything from Latin music and jazz to cover bands and community ensembles, with shows running from 6:30 to 7:30 every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening until August 27. Every single concert is completely free to attend, a tradition that dates back to the 1915 Deed of Gift in which the Spreckels family donated the organ and pavilion to the city of San Diego with the requirement that all performances remain open to the public at no cost.
Twilight in the Park got its start in 1981 when the late Mike Waggener imagined bringing free summer concerts to the pavilion, launching with just six local performers before quickly growing into the beloved community institution it is today. This summer's lineup is as eclectic as ever, featuring tribute bands, mariachi, big band orchestras, Santana and Beatles cover acts, a Navy Band Southwest ensemble, and dozens of community groups who donate their time and talent entirely for free. The series is partnering this year with Save Starlight, a nonprofit working to restore the historic Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park, and the two organizations are raising funds together to keep live music thriving in San Diego for generations to come. For anyone looking for the perfect free summer evening in Southern California, there is no better place to be than Balboa Park on a warm Tuesday night.
