Spider-Man Broke Box Office Records So Fast It Sank The Titanic.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now become the fourth highest-grossing film in the history of cinema, surpassing Titanic's $2.26 billion worldwide lifetime gross to sit behind only Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar in the all-time global rankings, with its worldwide total crossing $2.33 billion and still climbing. The record-breaking run began on its opening weekend, when it posted a $360 million domestic opening, the largest in the history of North American box office, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's previous record of $357 million, and helped push the entire weekend marketplace to an all-time record of $434 million for all films combined. It then became the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion globally, trailing only Endgame, and took just 17 days to cross $2 billion, also the second-fastest in history. Domestically, it has now surpassed Endgame's all-time domestic record of $858.3 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film ever in the United States, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which holds the domestic record at $936.6 million. The film stars Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, and was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
The summer of 2026 has now officially become the highest-grossing summer season in box office history, with the domestic summer total surpassing all previous records, driven primarily by Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which has crossed $1.1 billion worldwide and set multiple IMAX records of its own. For context on how significant Brand New Day's run has been: when Avengers: Endgame passed Titanic in 2019, James Cameron's production company posted a congratulatory social media image showing the Avengers logo sinking the Ship of Dreams alongside the message: an iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic. Six years later, Spider-Man completed the same feat in roughly a month of release. Brand New Day now has Avatar: The Way of Water, with its $2.334 billion lifetime gross, within reach, and is positioned to potentially become the third-highest-grossing film in history if its global run continues. Whether it gets there or not, the summer of 2026 has already answered the question that was being asked after years of pandemic disruption and streaming competition: movie theaters, given the right film, are not just alive. They are thriving.
