Lady Gaga and Doechii have released “Runway,” the lead single from The Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack, and it is every inch the fashion-world anthem the moment deserves. Built by a powerhouse production team including Bruno Mars the same man behind some of the biggest pop records of recent years. The track is a deliberate nod to the glossy, groove-heavy R&B and dance sound of the early 2000s that defined the era of the original film. Gaga made a conscious artistic choice to blend into that sonic world so fully she becomes almost unrecognizable, an intentional tribute to the soul and R&B vocalists of that era who were often left uncredited for their contributions to pop music.
The collaboration itself is a full-circle moment. Last year, Doechii presented Gaga with the Innovator Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, calling her “a lifeline,” and Gaga later told British Vogue that Doechii has “a pen that feels immediately legendary.” The result is a track as confident and sharp as the film it’s launching: “Monday through Sunday, I can turn the dancefloor into a runway.” The sequel reunites the full original cast with Gaga also set to appear.
