German Dad Spent A Year Building A Record Breaking Six-Foot LEGO Sausage

Tommy Schmidt is a 45-year-old IT worker and dad of two from Thuringia, Germany who has loved LEGO since childhood. When local meat producer Die Thüringer came to him with an unusual commission, he knew what he had to build. The result is now a Guinness World Records title holder: the largest LEGO brick sausage in the world, measuring 2 meters (6 feet 6 inches) long, built from 65,000 individual LEGO bricks. It is complete with a bun and a squiggle of mustard along the top. "In my home region of Thuringia, the Bratwurst is a local specialty that has since become known around the world," Tommy said. "We wanted to create a tribute to the famous Bratwurst and to our region." The model took six months to build but closer to a year from concept to completion. It started smaller but Tommy kept scaling it up to ensure what he called the wow factor. For most of the build it lived in the family living room. "During the entire building process, the model stood in our living room and eventually, even my wife got used to it," he laughed.
Getting it out of the house was nearly as challenging as building it. "Because of its size and weight, we needed many helpers to move everything safely," Tommy said. The sausage is now on display at Die Thüringer's facility. Tommy has previously built a Star Wars droid factory, Tony Stark's Iron Man workshop, and a large indoor swimming pool, all in LEGO. His next project will be a tribute to retro gaming. The record, he says, is just the beginning.
