Carter Allen spent five hours editing himself into the Shrek wedding scene to create the most perfectly personalized proposal for his girlfriend Andressa Da Silva, seamlessly adding a clip of himself running down the aisle saying he’s experienced true love too. The 26 year old writer and director met Andressa four years ago on a class film set at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he wrote the project and she acted in it, and from then on they’ve always helped each other out and spent evenings watching films together. Carter initially thought about proposing in a movie theater but realized you’d be proposing during a film you’d never seen before, and what if it was bad, so instead he waited for the perfect moment when Andressa suggested watching Shrek one evening. He worked on the edits while she was sleeping, timing his appearance in the scene to just before Lord Farquaad says the perfect bride, though he worried she might say no to watching it on December 6 since you can only push so hard to insist on watching Shrek without raising suspicion.
When the edited cameo appeared on screen, Carter had slipped away to change into the same suit he was wearing in the movie and returned moments later with a ring in his hand, getting down on one knee to propose. Carter completely lost himself and forgot everything he was going to say, admitting he didn’t give himself enough time for the suit change and nearly skipped the socks, joking that he should have done a dress rehearsal. The proposal video went viral on Reddit with 52,000 likes and over a thousand comments as people were charmed by the creative and intimate approach that perfectly honored the couple’s shared love of film. Carter had been humming the Shrek soundtrack constantly while working from home on the edits, carefully making sure Andressa didn’t get suspicious about his obsession with the beloved animated classic.
