YouTubers Are Beating Hollywood Directors At Their Own Game And The Numbers Are Staggering

Kane Parsons directing Chiwetel Ejiofor on the set of Backrooms for A24

Kane Parsons was sitting in a second-grade classroom when A24 released its first film, and this weekend his debut feature Backrooms opened to $81.4 million domestically and $118 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, outgrossing nearly every movie in A24's entire history in a single weekend. Parsons is 20 years old. He started posting Minecraft videos on YouTube at age 9, taught himself 3D animation software at 17, and turned a viral internet concept about endless liminal spaces into an 81-million-view animated short called Backrooms Found Footage that James Wan saw, believed in, and co-produced into a theatrical horror film that just became the largest opening ever for a first-time director in A24 history. He is not alone. Curry Barker, 26, a YouTube sketch comedian who wrote, directed, and starred in early videos with no budget, saw his debut horror film Obsession grow its box office take by 39 percent in its third weekend, a statistical impossibility for most films. And earlier this year, Markiplier, a YouTube creator with over 35 million subscribers, self-financed and self-distributed a $3 million sci-fi horror film called Iron Lung that opened to $18.2 million, more than twice the opening of a Hollywood studio film that cost $75 million to make.

What connects the three is not luck but years of accumulated craft and an audience built through thousands of hours of storytelling long before a studio ever called. A Hollywood Reporter film editor who covered the phenomenon said May at the box office was the most exciting time for moviegoers since Barbenheimer, but that it felt like a breath of fresh air, with new talents, no-name actors, and a 20-year-old bringing his strange corner of the internet to the masses. A producer on Backrooms said Hollywood needs to look to YouTube to find the young people who are coming up and have something to say, because people like Parsons grew up online and figured out how to get eyeballs on their work in a way that was not possible for young filmmakers a generation ago. Neither Parsons nor Barker has expressed interest in directing a Marvel film or a franchise reboot, and the studios signing them have largely been handed their own terms. The box office data from this summer's festival horror showdown suggests that, at least for now, the generation that learned filmmaking by making films every week for free on the internet has arrived, and Hollywood is still catching up.
