A Bronx Pizza Owner Feeds ANYONE Who Is Hungry

Daniel Romano has been in the pizza business for 45 years, since he was 10 years old working alongside his father at a South Bronx pizzeria. When he took over D'Romano's Pizza on East Tremont Avenue in Throggs Neck, he brought one rule with him: nobody goes hungry. He just had not needed to put it in writing yet. Then he spotted an elderly woman outside his shop, pulling food from his trash can. Romano walked outside, took her by the hand, led her into the restaurant, pulled a fresh slice straight from the oven, and put it in front of her. She started to cry. "Don't cry, eat," he said. "I don't want you eating out of a garbage." After she left, Romano grabbed a marker and wrote a sign by hand and taped it to his window: "To the people eating out of my garbage, I have more love for you than you think. Please come in and tell me you're hungry. I will forever give you a slice and fresh water to drink." The sign went viral with millions of views. Calls started coming in from Texas, Alaska, Hawaii, and across the world. Strangers are now calling the shop to pay for slices for people in need.
Romano says the instinct came from his late mother Carmela, who raised him with a simple saying in Italian dialect: "A desperate person will always make a better decision on a full stomach than on an empty one." It always stuck with him. At previous restaurants where he worked, the owners would not let him give food away, so he paid for it out of his own pocket. Now he has his own shop. The sign stays. "Right now, I think this world is shot," Romano said. "There's too much hate. There's too much negativity. Why not put a smile on someone's face?"
