Elementary School Named In Honor Of Their Retired Custodian

A new elementary school in Aubrey, Texas, will carry the name of a woman who spent 39 years making it a better place for kids, and she had no idea it was coming. Marilyn Hampton, a retired custodian for Aubrey Independent School District, was invited to a school board meeting and asked to roll out a red carpet, a task similar to many she performed during her career. It took her several seconds to realize what the carpet was for, because it displayed the name of the district's newest campus, which had been known only as Elementary School Number Five and will now be called Marilyn Hampton Elementary. Hampton, who is 76, said she had not stopped crying and told the room, you all are the best.
Superintendent Shannon Saylor said Hampton did far more than custodial work, from buying and delivering school supplies to helping students study for tests, and described her simply as truly Aubrey ISD. Saylor added that Hampton leaves behind a teaching legacy about being kind, working hard, and persevering. The honor means even more because Hampton is one of eight siblings and the only one to graduate high school, and she once thought of herself as a failure for not going to college until she reminded herself that God had put her exactly where she was supposed to be. These days she spends her time in a rocking chair at the district's Early Bird Learning Center feeding a little girl named Claire, and she is already wearing a Marilyn Hampton Elementary shirt ahead of the school's opening in August 2027.
