Johnny Depp Crashed Comic-Con As Ebenezer Scrooge

Nobody was expecting Johnny Depp at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23. He had no panel. He was not on any schedule. Then, just after noon, Victorian carolers appeared outside a pop-up shop called Scrooge and Marley in the Gaslamp Quarter, and a crowd began to gather. By 2:30 p.m., Depp emerged fully transformed into Ebenezer Scrooge complete with black coat, black top hat, cane, facial prosthetics, greying sideburns, and a scowl that would have made Dickens proud. He roamed the streets staying completely in character, barking "Have you no jobs?" at the crowd and dismissing fans' declarations of love with grumbles. Before retreating inside, he quietly delivered the only line Scrooge ever really needs. "Humbug." Later, he crashed the Collider Directors on Directing panel in Hall H to debut the first trailer for Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, his upcoming Paramount film directed by Ti West. The trailer opened with a line that felt directed at the entire audience as much as the character: "It's good to be back."
And it genuinely is. Depp, 63, has been largely absent from Hollywood for several years following a highly publicized legal battle he ultimately won. His return to blockbuster filmmaking has been one of the most anticipated comebacks in recent memory and the response at Comic-Con made that clear, videos went viral within minutes and fans flooded social media with overwhelming excitement. Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol hits theaters November 13, 2026, starring Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, and Andrea Riseborough. The official tagline: "The name you know. The story you don't." Watch the trailer below.
