Man Saves Getaway Bus Full Of Children

Ebro Ahmed, 27, was standing outside a convenience store in the Dayton neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota, when a school bus rolled past him with its door hanging wide open and its lights flashing. The flashing lights were what first caught his attention: those lights only come on when a bus is stopped, not while it is moving, and something about the combination made him look harder. When he looked inside, he saw the driver appearing to have a seizure. Ahmed threw his phone and his glasses to one of the students near the front of the bus, told her to hold them, and sprinted after the moving vehicle. Surveillance footage released by the convenience store Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco shows him running alongside the bus before jumping aboard and making his way to the front. He initially put the bus in reverse by mistake before finding the emergency brake and bringing the vehicle to a stop. Nearly 20 children were on board. None of them were injured. The driver was taken to the hospital and later released. Saint Paul Public Schools confirmed the driver had experienced a medical emergency, transferred the students to another bus, and arranged for school counselors to check in with all of them the following day.
Ahmed told ABC News he really felt it was his duty, and then added the line that traveled the furthest: also, too, it is kids we are talking about. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it. He described some of the students as screaming and some as calm, and credited two girls sitting near the front with helping him manage the situation under pressure. He also offered an unexpected explanation for how he kept his composure when he climbed onto a moving school bus carrying children and found a driver in medical distress: he credited Grey's Anatomy, the long-running medical drama, for teaching him how to stay calm in situations he could not have anticipated. The show teaches you about what to do in situations that you never could see yourself in, he said. Some tips and tricks that you could use for the rest of your life. Ahmed works at a store near the stop where the incident occurred. He was in the right place, he ran toward the problem instead of away from it, and he knew where the brake was. The rest is the kind of story that circulates because it reminds people of something they need reminding of: that bravery is usually something ordinary people do in the middle of an ordinary day, with no warning and no preparation, when the moment requires it.
