She Once Weighed Over 700 Pounds. Season 9 Shows Who She Is Now.

When TLC's 1000-lb Sisters first premiered in 2020, Tammy Slaton weighed over 700 pounds, required supplemental oxygen to breathe, depended on a walker and wheelchair for mobility, and could not fit in a standard vehicle seat. She has now lost more than 500 pounds. The transformation, documented across eight seasons of the show and accelerated by bariatric surgery in mid-2022 and skin removal surgery in Season 7, has left fans and family members describing her as unrecognizable. She currently weighs around 180 pounds. She no longer requires oxygen. She walks without assistance. She fits in a regular car, belted, without an extender. In a confessional from the Season 8 premiere, Tammy said simply: everything about me is smaller. A trailer for Season 9, now airing, shows her entering a new chapter that includes both the physical reality of who she has become and the emotional work still in front of her, including the slow reconstruction of her relationship with her sister Amy Slaton, from whom she became estranged as the weight loss journey unfolded.
The Season 9 trailer shows Amy saying that she and Tammy are taking things slow and rebuilding trust, while Tammy adds that it will take time to get the bond back. Amy's own journey continues with planned skin removal surgery this season, as well as learning to drive and exploring songwriting. The arc of Tammy's story since 2020 is worth pausing on: she started the show as someone who had been told she might not survive long without dramatic intervention, went through periods of weight gain and setback on camera, lost her husband Caleb Willingham to complications of super morbid obesity in July 2023, and then continued losing weight through grief and recovery. Fans who followed the series from its first episode watched someone transform not just physically but in ways that are harder to measure: in her confidence, her humor, her ability to be in a room and take up exactly the space she actually occupies rather than the space her condition demanded. She described the feeling of looking in the mirror two months after skin removal surgery and not recognizing herself. The word she chose was not a complaint. It was the whole point.
