South Park Won An Emmy And Changed Its Name To South America

South Park is back, it just won an Emmy, and it now has a new name. On September 7, 2026, South Park won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for its Season 27 premiere, which marked the show's return after a two-year hiatus and became one of the most talked-about episodes in the series' nearly 30-year history. The very next day, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone celebrated by announcing that the show — now heading into its 29th season — would henceforth be known as South America. Their statement was brief, specific, and very much in character. "Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to South America," Parker and Stone wrote. "We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation." The announcement was a winking reference to the recent trend of major tech companies updating their maps and services to reflect politically motivated geographic name changes — Apple and Google had both updated their maps to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and Lake Ontario to Lake America.
South America — the show formerly known as South Park — premieres its 29th season on Wednesday, September 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central, with episodes streaming the next day on Paramount+. New episodes will air on September 30, October 14, October 28, November 11, and November 25. The show has been a fixture of American pop culture since 1997 and shows no signs of running out of material. Parker and Stone, asked at a Comic-Con panel whether they anticipated the reaction to their recent season, responded together: "We're terribly sorry." They were smiling when they said it.
