Pokémon GO Turned 10: What It Became Is Something Nobody Predicted

Pokémon GO launched in July 2016 as a mobile game that asked people to walk around their neighborhoods catching digital creatures, and in the weeks that followed it became one of the strangest and most joyful cultural events of the decade, filling parks at midnight, creating impromptu communities of strangers, and briefly making it seem possible that a smartphone app might genuinely change how people moved through cities. Ten years later, it has outlasted every prediction of its demise, generated more than a billion dollars in revenue in 2025 alone, been played by more than 800 million people in more than 150 countries, and accumulated a community of daily players who average 45 minutes of play per day while collectively having walked more than 100 billion kilometers, roughly 334 round trips between the Earth and the Sun. On July 9, 2026, to mark the anniversary, Pokémon GO transformed Times Square in New York City into an immersive real-world game board, replicating the vision from the game's original 2015 launch trailer, and held a surprise live raid battle in which more than 1,000 players simultaneously faced the legendary Pokémon Mega Mewtwo Y together, in one of the largest in-person raid battles in the game's history, streamed live for fans around the world.
The 10th anniversary celebrations extended well beyond Times Square. From July 4 through July 6, the game ran a global 10th Anniversary Party event with four times the usual experience points and stardust rewards for catching Pokémon, along with the debut of a new anniversary Pokémon. The larger Pokémon GO Fest 2026, which ran July 11 and 12, was made entirely free for every player in the world for the first time ever, with all participants receiving access to special research, increased shiny encounter rates, and an encounter with the mythical Pokémon Zeraora. More than two dozen community celebration events took place simultaneously around the world. Players interviewed by People magazine described the anniversary as a reunion, with longtime community members reconnecting with friends they had made at raids and community events years earlier. Scopely, which now operates the game, noted that Trainers have collectively caught more than one trillion Pokémon since 2016 and completed more than 10 billion raid battles worldwide. What began as a summer experiment in augmented reality has become, a decade later, one of the most enduring and quietly community-building games ever made.
