A Louisiana Teacher Thought She Was Going To An Assembly About Test Scores. She Left With $25,000.

Students and staff at Stella Worley Middle School in Westwego, Louisiana, gathered on November 4, 2025, for what they told eighth-grade ELA teacher Sarah Watkins was an assembly about academic growth. The Louisiana State Superintendent was there. The media was there. It seemed important. Then Watkins realized the assembly was not about test scores at all. It was about her. Dr. Joshua Barnett, CEO of the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, stepped to the microphone and announced Watkins as the recipient of a $25,000 Milken Educator Award — known as the Oscars of Teaching — given to outstanding K-12 educators early in their careers for what they have already achieved and the promise of what they will accomplish. Watkins was left speechless. Surrounded by students, colleagues, and dignitaries who had known about the surprise for weeks, she could barely process what was happening. The $25,000 is hers to use however she chooses. "Winning this award was truly overwhelming for me," she said. "In the moment, it didn't even feel real."
The video was posted to TikTok and accumulated 6.7 million views, the highest of any award recipient video in the account's history. Comments flooded in. Watkins called her mother immediately after the ceremony — that call was also filmed and posted. "I hope that people who see the video, people who see educators, they recognize that we do this work because we love children," she said. "We're trying to impact the future." In June 2026, Watkins traveled to Washington D.C. as part of the 2025 class of Milken Educators, where the award was formally presented again before a national audience. She is Louisiana's 54th Milken Educator since the state joined the program in 2001.
