A Wisconsin Zoo Just Asked The Entire City To Help Find Something.

Violet a two-year-old striped skunk from Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield Wisconsin who escaped her enclosure and is on the loose in the city following flood damage to her exhibit foundation

Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield, Wisconsin has issued an urgent public notice asking residents across the city to be on the lookout for an escaped animal, and before anyone panics, it should be noted that the animal in question is a two-year-old striped skunk named Violet, who weighs somewhere between two and twelve pounds and who, zoo staff note with appropriate delicacy, may also be influenced by the fact that it is currently skunk mating season. Violet has lived at the zoo for two years, arriving as a bottle-raised pup from a wildlife park in Minnesota, and her enclosure had successfully contained her throughout that entire time, including a previous stint housing mountain lions. Authorities believe a combination of flash flooding and heavy snowfall this season may have quietly deteriorated a section of the exhibit's foundation, creating an opening through which Violet took her opportunity and walked into the wider world of central Wisconsin.

The city has asked residents to call Marshfield Police Dispatch immediately if they spot a skunk behaving in a way that seems unusually calm or out of place, which admittedly sets a somewhat challenging observational bar given that most wild skunks also prefer to project an air of serene confidence. The zoo's official guidance is firm on one point: do not approach, do not attempt to capture, simply report and maintain visual contact if possible. Staff are actively searching and have emphasized that Violet poses no meaningful public safety risk, as she is a habituated, bottle-raised animal, though they do acknowledge that her natural defenses remain fully operational, and that anyone who has ever surprised a skunk on a hiking trail will understand exactly what that means. Violet's enclosure companion, a fellow skunk named Poppy, remains at the zoo and is reportedly unaffected by the whole situation, possibly because Poppy has better judgment, or possibly because Poppy just had not noticed the hole yet. While this is a developing story, we hope to provide an update on Violet once she returns back home with Poppy.
