Meet Osito, The Rescue Dog Who Just Became The Biggest Star Of The 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has produced its first great story, and it is not about a goal, a win, or a penalty. It is about an 8-year-old rescue poodle mix named Osito, which means "little bear" in Spanish, who arrived at Mexico's opening match against South Korea on June 18 perched calmly in the back of a cargo bicycle, wearing a Mexico jersey, sunglasses, and a cap. As thousands of fans streamed toward the stadium, many stopped to photograph him, pet him, and post videos online. Within hours Osito was appearing on international broadcasts and spreading across social media. Some fans mistook him for a stuffed animal because he sat so perfectly still. His owner, Jorge Rangel, a delivery worker in Mexico City, has ridden with Osito on his daily rounds for two years using a specially adapted cargo bicycle with a cushioned back compartment. Children rush to meet him on the streets. Rangel spent weeks before the World Cup adapting a pair of sunglasses to fit the dog and dressing him in a full national team kit. "It exceeded all my expectations," he said of the response.

But what resonates most is not the costume or the fame. Rangel adopted Osito during a difficult period in his life and describes him as an emotional lifeline. "I didn't know what it meant to love an animal until Osito came into my life," he said. If Rangel ever leaves without him, Osito does something he almost never does: bark. Now, as World Cup celebrations continue, the videos keep circulating and every morning the two climb back on their bicycle and head into the streets. "More than a dog," Rangel says, "he's my daily companion."
