Finland Is Running A 24/7 Puppy Livestream And The Entire Country Is Watching

Newborn Puppies Sleeping Pile

Finland is a country of 5.7 million people, and in the past two weeks its national broadcaster's puppy livestream has accumulated more than 6 million views on social media alone. The programme is called Pentulive — "pentu" means puppy in Finnish — and it is exactly what it sounds like: a continuous, unedited, 24-hour livestream of Hilkka, a five-year-old Lagotto Romagnolo dog, and her litter of six puppies as they sleep, nurse, squirm, and very slowly begin to figure out what the world is. Hilkka gave birth to four males and two females on October 10, and the cameras have been running ever since. The puppies are just now opening their eyes and taking their first unsteady steps. A naming ceremony is scheduled for this Saturday. The entire country is watching. "Puppy Live offers comfort and relaxation amidst the rush of everyday life," said Sonja Mutanen, a doctoral researcher studying media and animals at the University of Eastern Finland. "It's a wonderful escape from the human world into a puppy bubble."

24/7 PUPPY LIVE STREAM: WATCH HERE

Pentulive was first launched in 2021 by Yle science journalist Pirjo Koskinen as part of a series on canine science, and it has been running annually since, now in its sixth season, with last year's page accumulating 6.5 million views against a national population of just under 5.66 million — meaning more page views than there are people in the country. The timing is deliberate. Finland is one of the world's northernmost countries and is heading into its long, dark winter, and the puppy livestream has become a much-anticipated feature of those months for millions of Finns who find the endless footage of small animals napping and snuffling together to be exactly the kind of thing the internet was supposed to be for. The puppies will go home with their new families in mid-December. Until then, the cameras stay on.
