Japan's Most Famous Baby Monkey Turned 1 And Received 2,500 Birthday Cards

On July 27, 2026, a Japanese macaque named Punch turned one year old at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden east of Tokyo, and the birthday exhibit the zoo set up in his honor has received approximately 2,500 cards and messages from well-wishers across Japan and from overseas. Punch's story began with a difficult start. He was abandoned by his mother almost immediately after birth, presumably because of exhaustion from the delivery, and zookeepers stepped in to nurse him by hand. To help him develop the gripping strength that newborn macaques need to survive, they gave him a stuffed orangutan plushie to cling to. In February 2026, the zoo posted images of Punch clinging to the toy on social media, and the response was immediate and global, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the zoo in the weeks that followed, half of them from outside Japan. When other monkeys in the enclosure pushed him away during his initial integration into the group, Punch retreated to his toy orangutan for comfort. Fans around the world watched and responded with the hashtag #HangInTherePunch.
A year later, Punch no longer needs the plushie. He has made friends among the roughly 50 macaques in the enclosure and is difficult to distinguish from the others as he mingles and plays throughout the day. He still draws large crowds and has a birthday exhibit inside the zoo where the cards and messages from his fans cover the walls alongside video footage chronicling his first twelve months. Among the visitors on his birthday weekend was a woman named Kumi Ishizawa from Kobe, who said she had been ill earlier in the year and had made coming to see Punch her recovery goal. She arrived at the zoo having recently gotten well and said she was very happy she had made it. Another fan, Yeye Lights, who had never visited the zoo before becoming a Punch fan, now holds an annual pass and brought a birthday cake. The zoo's director, Takashi Yasunaga, recalled that it was extremely hot when Punch was born and that the memory is still vivid. He thanked the two keepers who had cared for Punch through those early weeks for doing everything they could. The monkey who had to fight to be accepted by his own kind now has 2,500 strangers who wanted to wish him a happy birthday.
